Description

TED Talk and YouTube Performers Sarah Kay and Phil Kaye delight and inspire audiences through their national movement that celebrates and inspires youth self-expression through Spoken Word Poetry. Conceived in 2004, Project V.O.I.C.E. encourages young people to engage with the world around them and use Spoken Word Poetry as an instrument through which they can explore and better understand their culture, their society, and ultimately themselves.

"For audiences who are new to the medium, this performance is the perfect introduction to the magic of Spoken Word Poetry, but for longtime Spoken Word fans, this show also promises to surprise and reinvigorate a love of the art," according to information provided to the college. "Armed with only a microphone, award-winning Project VOICE performers Phil Kaye and Sarah Kay are champions of vulnerability, cheerleaders for the unexpected, and ruthless flashlights for all your heart's nooks and crannies."

Immediately preceding the performance by Kay and Kaye on April 18 will be the annual Blackwater Review reception in the adjoining McIlroy Gallery from 6 to 6:45 p.m. The event includes selected student readings and the unveiling of the student art selected for the cover of this year’s Blackwater Review, the college’s annual literary and fine arts journal.

In addition, on Friday, April 15, selected student poets and writers published in this year's Blackwater Review will read and perform their pieces at a casual event at 6 p.m. in the McIlroy Gallery.
